Descriptive titles and names

ルール

Do not use a comma between a short descriptive title and a name when the title comes directly before it ("the biologist Jane Goodall"). Use commas only when the name is extra information.

短い肩書きが名前の直前に来る場合(the biologist Jane Goodall)はコンマを使わない。名前が付加情報の場合のみコンマを使う。

✔ 正しい文: The novelist Toni Morrison won the Nobel Prize in 1993.

✘ 誤った文: The novelist, Toni Morrison, won the Nobel Prize in 1993.

→ 直し方: Remove the commas: "novelist" and the name work together.

コツ: "Title + name" with no "the … , …" pause takes no commas; "Morrison, a novelist, …" does.
