Items in a list or comparison should use the same grammatical form.

✔ 正しい文： The volunteers planted trees, cleaned the river and painted the fence.
✘ 誤った文： The volunteers planted trees, cleaned the river and were painting the fence.
→ 直し方： Use the same past-tense form: "painted".
コツ: Line the items up: they should all be -ing words, all "to" verbs, or all the same tense.
