Items in a list or comparison should use the same grammatical form.

✘ 틀린 문장: The volunteers planted trees, cleaned the river and were painting the fence.
→ 고치는 법: Use the same past-tense form: "painted".
요령: Line the items up: they should all be -ing words, all "to" verbs, or all the same tense.
