Read Aloud와 Repeat Sentence는 속도가 아니라 일정한 속도, 분명한 발음, 자연스러운 끊어 읽기를 평가합니다. 의미 단위로 읽는 법, 멈추지 않고 실수를 넘기는 법, 녹음으로 연습하는 법을 알려 줍니다.
Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence reward a steady pace, clear pronunciation and natural phrasing — not speed. Learn how to read in meaning groups, recover from mistakes without stopping and practise with recordings.
Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence appear early in the Speaking and Writing part of PTE Academic. Both are integrated tasks: Read Aloud also contributes to Reading, and Repeat Sentence to Listening. They reward the same speaking qualities, so you can practise them together.
What good speaking sounds like
Scores for these tasks consider content (the words you say), oral fluency and pronunciation. Good fluency is not fast talking. It means:
- a steady, natural pace,
- pauses at sensible places — between phrases, at commas and full stops,
- no long hesitations, repetitions or restarts.
Good pronunciation means being easy to understand: clear vowels and consonants, word endings that are not dropped, and natural word stress and intonation. You do not need a native-speaker accent.
Read Aloud: read in meaning groups
You have a short time to look at the text before the microphone opens. Use it to divide the text into meaning groups — this is called chunking.
The new library / will open in March, / offering students / a quiet place to study / and free access to online databases.
Pause briefly at each slash and read each group smoothly. This sounds natural and helps listeners follow the meaning.
Tips:
- Look ahead to the next chunk while you are reading the current one.
- Check difficult words during preparation, such as *particularly*, *phenomenon* or *environmental*.
- Stress important content words; reduce small words naturally.
Repeat Sentence: remember meaning, then copy the rhythm
In Repeat Sentence you hear a sentence once and repeat it exactly. As with Write from Dictation, focus on the meaning and the rhythm, not each separate sound.
- Start speaking promptly after the audio ends.
- Copy the speaker's stress and intonation — this improves both fluency and pronunciation.
- If you forget part of the sentence, keep going smoothly with the parts you remember rather than stopping.
If you make a mistake
The most damaging habit is stopping and restarting. A small mistake costs little; a long pause or restart damages fluency. If you say a word incorrectly, simply continue. Self-correction is natural in conversation, but in these tasks a smooth delivery is usually better.
Microphone and timing
- Keep the microphone at the same distance throughout.
- Do not start before the microphone opens.
- Avoid long silence at the start — the recording may stop if nothing is heard for a few seconds.
Practise with recordings
The fastest way to improve is to listen to yourself:
- Read or repeat a sentence and record it.
- Listen once for pace — too fast? too many pauses?
- Listen once for clarity — any unclear words or missing endings?
- Try again and compare.
The AUSLEX Read Aloud practice and Repeat Sentence practice include a recorder that keeps your recording only in your browser, plus slow playback of the model sentence.
