Tóm tắt

PTE Academic là bài thi trên máy tính với thang điểm 10–90, và nhiều dạng bài được tính cho hơn một kỹ năng. Biết dạng bài nào ảnh hưởng điểm nào, và một số câu trả lời nay có người xem xét cùng AI, giúp bạn luyện tập hiệu quả và trung thực.

PTE Academic is a computer-based test scored from 10 to 90, and many tasks count towards more than one skill. Knowing which tasks feed which scores — and that some answers are now also reviewed by people — helps you practise efficiently and honestly.

PTE Academic is a computer-based English test of about two hours, taken in one sitting. It has three parts — Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening — and reports an overall score and four communicative skill scores on a scale of 10 to 90.

Integrated skills: one task, more than one score

A key feature of PTE is that many tasks are integrated. They test more than one skill at once, so one answer can contribute to two scores. For example:

This is why these tasks are often called "high-value": doing them well lifts several scores at the same time.

What the scoring looks at

For most speaking and writing tasks, scores are based on a mix of:

  • Content — did you respond to the task with relevant information?
  • Form — did you follow the rules, such as length or a single sentence?
  • Language — grammar, vocabulary and spelling,
  • Oral fluency and pronunciation for speaking tasks.

Some tasks give partial credit. In Write from Dictation, for example, you earn a point for each correct word, so a nearly perfect sentence still scores well.

Recent changes: people, not only machines

PTE has always used automated scoring, but in 2025 Pearson introduced changes that matter for test preparation. New speaking tasks were added — including Respond to a Situation and Summarize Group Discussion — and human reviewers now check the content of responses on several task types alongside the AI. Responses that sound like a fixed script, unrelated to the actual question, can be flagged.

The practical message is simple: answer the real question. A response that clearly addresses the image, lecture or situation in front of you is safer — and more useful for your real English — than a memorised template. Read more in Templates in PTE: what changed.

Enabling skills: spelling and grammar still matter

Even though PTE reports four communicative skills, small accuracy skills affect many tasks:

  • Spelling — affects Write from Dictation, Listening Fill in the Blanks, essays and summaries.
  • Grammar — affects every writing task.
  • Pronunciation and fluency — affect every speaking task.

Because of integration, improving spelling can raise your Listening score as well as your Writing score.

How to plan your practice

  1. Start with high-value integrated tasks: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Write from Dictation and Summarize Written Text.
  2. Fix accuracy problems early: keep a list of words you misspell and practise them in dictation.
  3. Practise speaking naturally: steady pace, clear word endings, sensible pauses.
  4. Use timed practice once your accuracy improves, because time pressure is part of the test.
  5. Review your recordings: listening to yourself is the fastest way to notice pronunciation and fluency problems.

Know your target

Universities, employers and visa programmes set different PTE score requirements, and these can change. Always check the exact overall and skill scores you need on the official website of the organisation you are applying to, and confirm test information on the official PTE website.
